  1. I called iron planet to find out if the sf-97 had ohv on it and could I get a sf-97 form I was told that since i had a Florida title already that may be a problem they said they would call me back but never did. I didn’t think it was going to be this much trouble . with all the stuff I read about the Humvees and what is on iron planets web site about Humvees heading to the highway I thought that with the way people are suing everybody this day and age that it would clear them . because they sold it as a off road only I’m told that some states don’t have inspections don’t know if its true or not. I didn’t buy my truck for profit I just bought it because I always wanted one

    1. Bob…Good News fellow Floridians and to ALL Humvee Owners!!!
After 4 months of patiently waiting and politely asking at the DMV here in Jacksonville, FL, They finally granted me a title, tag, and registration on my now street legal 1987 AM General HMMWV M998. This afternoon around 4 pm, DMV (Jacksonville) called me and told me to come in so they can change my title to “street legal”. It was registered as: 1987 AM General UT (utility vehicle), I guess they get tired of seeing me in their office almost weekly and finally decided to give it to me. I found out from DMV Regional Office (which is in Tampa) that the decision is up to the county of DMV where you belong, so that is exactly what I told the DMV in Jacksonville according to the Regional Office. And today at exactly 4:38 pm, DMV Jacksonville handed me my tag, registration, and title that cost me $184.70 (went up a little ‘coz I pick a Coast Guard license plate, for obvious reason that I am a retired Cost Guard). Now I am a proud OWNER and DRIVER of a Humvee. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel just be PATIENT and be POLITE to DMV staff. Shoot me an email If you have any questions.

      1. Hey I was wondering what steps you took to getting a tag as I am in the process myself please let me know anything would be a huge help. Thanks Caseyjwheeler82@yahoo.com

      2. John Please I know you do not know me But my name is Trent Barry I live here in Jacksonville Florida could you tell me the name of the clerk that you used..I’ll buy you lunch. I’ll flat out pay you something. (904) 747-8017 cell

      3. dmv in palm beach gave me a legal title and tag for street use and then called me the day after telling me to return my title and go to regional office thoughts

      4. Hello, I am retired and have time to invest in the hours needed to get a title/tag. I too live in Jacksonville and want to pull the trigger and buy one, but am willing to listen to your frustrations and method, but most importantly would love to see your Humvee. Do you still have it? Thx in advance, Tom

      5. Your eMAil caught my eye. I too recently purchased a 1989 HUMVEE M998 from Iron Planet with Title from the US Gov’t. There is a red ink stamp at the top og the title that says: “OFF ROAD USE ONLY”.
The Wx. is getting a bit chilly so will not be able to work on her much longer to get her “Street Legal” before next year.
Can you write down a List of all the items you had to do to get your Hummer “Street Legal” (and how or what you used).
Mine needs a license plate frame & light, etc. Following items work:
        o – Headlights work,
        o – Windshield Wipers work,
        o – All Seat-belts work

        Thanks much – – John / sends

    2. Iron Planet and their so called Gov Planet has to be one of the worst costumer service nightmares I have ever seen. If I hadn’t kept on them to get me my Humvee I don’t think id have it to this day. It is sad that you have to pay for a bill of sale and on top of that to call them every month just to see what is going on, and trust me there were a lot of phone calls. I couldn’t be happier with my Humvee and especially that I waited forever to actually have one. But with that being said I will never buy from Gov Planet again.

      1. My huemmr gets My huemmr gets about 12 mpg in town. Not much worse than any other lifted truck with oversized tires. And I love mine. Perfect for the Arizona desert. Was this answer helpful?

      2. iron planet sucks a lotm The attorneys who own the co make sure they get every nickel but we can go to hell for them. In alabama the govplanet guy put our 998s in a redneck tow truck lot called allens towing or something. This fat *** bald **** in byron ga sits in a mobile home and acts like hes more than a frikkin vulture in a crap tow truck. He beat my 998 with a sledge hammer and busted it up good before bringing it out to the street. I know why he was teased in middle school n called the ‘2 inch wonder’.

  2. I just bought one from Iron Planet but awaiting for them to call me so that I can do ahead pick up my HMMWV, from what I see I will be going through hell to get it. I was so happy to see that I might be able to get my tag here in FL. Any help and heads up would be appreciated. Thank you all

  3. Is IronPlanet/GovPlanet the only contractor allowed to disperse the humvees? Is there another source?

    1. It appears GovPlanet is the only direct seller. Let us know if you locate another avenue to the DoD.

  4. Hello from Denver Colorado .. So Here in Denver I am trying to work through the headache after waiting 7 months and spending $10,5000. on the M998 plus %10 fee $1050.00 to GovPlanet and $50. transaction fee. puts that at $11,600. and State sales tax $336.40 and County tax at $127.60 and City sales tax $423.40 for the grand Total of $12,487.40 now add shipping from Hill AFB Utah $1075.00 so far spent $13,562.40.
So I went to the local DMV office (Arapahoe County) Denver suburb.
I was told to get a VIN verification first after spending almost 2 hours in line and sitting at the window for 40 minutes as the officials where trying to get that bewildered look at the SF 97 form, not knowing the “M998 was a Hummer truck”. I have the M998 sitting at a local garage that will change the fluids and check it out which will be more money spent, (btw I am not rich just maintenance mechanic that works making $25. dollars per hour, I have sold may Kaiser M715 that I have had for the last 20 years sold for $8,000. and had to save the rest..) Expensive so far it is .. I will have to go back to the DMV to get some temp plates and truck insurance tomorrow. I see here is the problem is that at the top of the “Certificate to Obtain Title to a Vehicle” it is stamped in RED letters as “OFF-ROAD USE ONLY” and that threw them for a loop.. The M998 is a 1993 Mfg. by AM General with 21000 miles and ex-USAF M998 truck. I plan to take photos of the M998 and get all the documents which are needed as I will list them in order. 1. SF97 which is a long number as it is a designated Certificate Number. and 2. is the Notary paper that was sent by GovPlanet to me with the SF97 by FedEx after 7 months of waiting to get the EUC from them (and I am ex USAF with a good DD-214) and living at the same address for 30 years here in Denver Colorado). 3. M998 insurance proof. 4. Photos of the M998. 5. VIN number verification from State Police or a private company for a greater fee as it costs $20. from the State of Colorado. So if you add up the years the M998 is 23 years old M998 and I think it’s “Insane to have spent $13,562.40. so far on such and old vehicle” now it need’s a doors and a top and paint job and other things so the reality is this is NOT going to be cheep ownership.. So long for now I will post and here is a email “geoexpl@yahoo.com” Al..

    1. Government officials are never fun to deal with; but, the title will be worth it. Let us know how your endeavor works out. Thank you for sharing. We appreciate your service as well.

    2. Any update on your process at this time, Al?

  5. the fs 97..is a problem..same here in texas……its been a nitemare..to get this thing road worthy………

    1. what finnaly happened did you get it on the road?

    2. Hello, I’m Steve, I’m also in ( San Antonio) Texas. I’m about to bid on a Humvee myself. I was wondered if you ever got your vehicle set to drive on public roads? If you did, How many hoops did you have to jump though?

  6. Geez. I didn’t realize the title issue was that difficult. I lucked out, mine was in a museum and already state titled. Keep us posted.

  7. What is the rear curtain for a soft top M998 part number. Not the whole top but just the divider. My did not have it with the Humvee on the day of the pickup. Thanks

    1. Based on the information we have available, there are 3 variants based on color:

12340737 should be the base part number with the -# designating the color matching your M998.

  8. All…I got a regular legal tender Florida title through http://www.broadwaytitle.com for my 1994 M998 HMMWV. It cost just under $1K and took about 7 weeks. I live in SE Florida so this was perfect. I already had collectors insurance on my Deuce through Gulfway Insurance http://www.racensur.com and got the M998 added to the policy. I had no issue with my DMV application for a antique plate….you have to send in a copy of your title and insurance card.

FYI…in florida, if you have a vehicle that you only drive so often to events, parades, etc. you can get an antique plate for a former Military vehicle regardless of age for a one time registration fee of $46.50. Yup, no more yearly registration fee.

    Link to antique/permanent plate application…..http://www.flhsmv.gov/dmv/forms/btr/83045.pdf&ved=0ahUKEwj8zJT3yZLOAhVDGR4KHQKbCNAQFggfMAI&usg=AFQjCNEtHLh4t8a0oqw5myJay2tSpBkshQ

  9. I have a nephew who sells them.

  10. Hello everyone bad news here in Minnesota I recently bought a m998 from a wisconsin with road legal title and plates. So I went to the Dmv and tried transferring title to Minnesota and that went good until I received letter from dmv with original title from wisconsin stating I need to return tabs and plates cause this is an off road only vehicle so now what to do gonna call the state in morning seems crazy it was ok in Wi but not mn stuck with a large loan on something I can’t use BS.. any ideas would be great

    1. We hate to hear that. That is happening from time to time in a few other states as well. What was the vehicle called on the title? We suspect that the DMV’s are searching for a particular term to look for these trucks. Our take is that it would be hard to pull the tags/registration since you already paid, but of course renewal will be an issue in the future.

    2. I’m from Wisconsin and looking to buy. Is it still titled in WI?

  11. Hi There. I am Prior military (11B) Infantry. I didn’t get enough of the Humvee, so I got one. 1989 6.2L. I was able to pick mine up after 6 weeks. I’ve been working on it, fixing the items that needed replacing, I got a temp plate, got it inspected ( Inspection Certificate), and now I’m waiting for the SF97 and I hope that When I go get the DV License plate they don’t give me any more trouble. (1) I have Insurance, (2) Inspection Certificate, and hope to get my SF97. I hope that that will be enough to get the registration.

  12. I was unable to get a license plate for my m998. They said off road only. That if I wanted to call the regional office they will provide a phone number.I went to the Texas department of transportation Web site. All I found was the application VTR-135 Rev 01/16.Application for former military vehicle license plate. I will try that for now. I will post again later.

  13. finally, I got my registration. If you have any questions please call me. 830-221-8600

    1. Omar, I am waiting on my title from GovPlanet. I am guessing I need to get it insured, inspected and would not think it would be that hard for registration in Texas. Maybe I am wrong. 936-443-5897 Houston area

  14. On July 7th, I received my humvee registration in Texas. It can be done, you need that guy that can get it done. You can try all you want, be the most kind person in the world, but it will not happen for you. You can, if you have Doug Smith on your side.

  15. I’m from Wisconsin, which is one of the States that allow tile and tags. Does anyone have any advice on the procedure to register as a road worthy vehicle? Is there any verbiage I should avoid or use when filling out the application?

  16. Got my m998 a couple months ago. Spent 4000.00 on doors, covers, brush guard, new lights, all new fluids and filters. Going to dmv again tomorrow to try and obtain title and tags.

    1. Hello Sir
Do you mind telling me where you got your xdoor?
I see them on line for 3 thousand for a pair of front doors and I was hoping I can get a pair of front doors for a thousand.
      Thanks

  17. I picked up my gov planet M998 at Hill Air Force base in Utah. 12/2017. As of recently, Idaho wont issue title or plates for this or any military vehicle newer than 1967. Previously issued titles are grandfathered in. That way, farmers and local gov. agencies using these surplus vehicles for fire fighting, harvesting, etc. can continue as before. I have written state political officials, and was told it will take a statuatory fix to remedy this. Should know more in 2 months. As of now, I have a cherry 998 that I cant use. My SF97 is stamped “Off road use only” like all of them.

    1. Thank you for sharing! Yeah, some of the states are pushing back once they find out Humvees are getting the proper paperwork. You might try titling in another state and transferring it in.

  18. I just got my m998 in california. I have the option to purchase the sf97, or full montana title (off road use only). Which one would help my cause more in the upcoming attempts to get it on the road.

  19. I just won a M998 in california. I have the option of getting th sf97 form or a full montana title (both designated for off road). Is there a better option to choose? I’m trying to prepare myself for a long battle and want to be as prepared as possible.

  20. New York is a HMMWV friendly state as long as you make sure it will pass a NY State Inspection. You’ll have to make sure it has a tag light for the rear, but other than that, mine had no problems passing. I went through State Farm for my insurance, and both the insurance, and NY State go off from the original VIN number, so there’s not a bunch of zeros added on the paperwork.
